Law Firm Value Creation Part 1: Exploring Outside Investment

The legal industry is at an inflection point. For decades, regulations have barred outside ownership of law firms, leaving law partners with limited options to fund growth or unlock the value of their equity. Now, an alternative model is opening the door for private equity investment in law — allowing partners to build wealth and law firms to accelerate growth.

This model — where a law firm forms a sister entity commonly referred to as Management Services Organization (MSO) — has proven compliant and effective in other regulated industries like medicine and accounting. As the model has made its way to legal, some law firms are employing it to secure outside capital, while others struggle to understand the opportunity.

Marks Baughan, the leading investment bank in the legal sector, has launched a webinar series to help law firm leaders understand the MSO structure and see how outside capital can create opportunities for them and their firms.

Led by Marks Baughan’s Chris Hildreth and John Martin, the first installment in the series was held on September 25, 2025; you may view the entire session by filling out the form above. Our guest was Scott Brinkley, CEO of a360inc, who shared his first-hand experience running a legal MSO.

We invite you to view the webinar or reach out to Chris Hildreth (childreth@marbau.com) or John Martin (jmartin@marbau.com) to explore whether outside capital could be right for you.
